Paris

Just returned from a month in Paris. As you can imagine, I had an incredible time and saw a lot of wonderful art and architecture. As I have time to sort through the photos I will post some of the highlights. Those of you taking my classes will likely start seeing some of them in my lectures soon.

Awesome Pictures! I have been to both those places as well. The Eiffel Tower is truly a work of art. Do you know how long it took to build?

I can answer that one. La Tour Eiffel was completed in 2 years, 2 months, and 5 days beginning January 26, 1887. It was designed by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (who also worked on the Statue of Liberty) for the 1889 World's Fair. Interestingly enough, the French hated the tower and considered its modern style to be an eyesore in the city, and demanded its dismantling. It was set to be taken apart in 1909 but because of its communication abilities via its antenna, it was allowed to stay and eventually became the single most visited monument in the world.

In both of your pictures, I see the hints in the background confirming that Paris truly is a city of the arts. Each building in the background has fascinating structures and capturing my eyes. Incredible pictures! I hope to visit Paris next winter as well! Great post!

I love dvisting Paris. My only regret was I only got to stay for a few days. I want to visit the Louvre one day. Even the extrior architecture is amazing.

Although Paris might not longer be the capital of the arts (New York overtook it after World War I), it clearly houses some of the world’s most impressive art works. The Louvre is an excellent example of how Paris served as the transition to Modernist art. Although the overall structure is modeled in the Baroque tradition, there is a pyramid in the main courtyard, which was constructed in a modern style.

How exciting - I when my professors talk about their personal stories from the study in which we are learning from. I took Anthropology & my professor would talk about all of the digging work that he had done & the future trips he would take...he taught from the heart and from experience. That is why I also like your classes because of your passion - you have traveled to these places and you share your experiences with us - whether it be by pictures or stories. Thank you for sharing this with us. - Jessica C.
